Oxfam believes that in a world rich in resources, poverty isn't a fact of life but an injustice which must be overcome. We believe that everyone is entitled to a life of dignity and opportunity, and we work with poor communities, local partner organisations, volunteers and supporters to make this a reality. Oxfam's goal is a world where every person is safe, healthy, secure, skilled, heard, and equal.
Whether donating, fundraising, campaigning, volunteering, or working on the ground to implement project activities, Oxfam donors, supporters, staff, project partners and participants are working together to overcome poverty and injustice.
Oxfam International is a confederation of 12 organisations working together in more than 100 countries to find lasting solutions to poverty, suffering and injustice. With many of the causes of poverty global in nature, members of Oxfam International believe they can achieve greater impact in addressing issues of poverty by their collective efforts.
To achieve the maximum impact on poverty, the Oxfams around the world link up their work on development programs, humanitarian response, and lobbying for policy changes at national and global level. Our popular campaigns and communications work is aimed at mobilising public opinion for change.
A world of Difference
We work with poor people: we seek to help people organise so that they are able to gain better access to the opportunities they need to improve their livelihoods and govern their own lives.
We also work with people affected by humanitarian disasters, with preventive measures and preparedness, as well as emergency relief.

We influence powerful people: Experience of the real issues confronting poor people is linked to high-level research and lobbying aiming to change international policies and practices in ways which will ensure that poor people have the rights, opportunities and resources they need to improve and control their lives.
Every year, 15 million people die from infectious diseases. Most of them are poor people living in developing countries and cannot afford to buy the medicines which would save their lives. |
We join hands with all people: Popular campaigning, alliance building and media work are designed to raise awareness among the public of the real solutions to global poverty, in order to enable and motivate people to play an active part in the movement for change, and to foster a sense of global citizenship.

Oxfam's Call for Education
Today, 115 million children are denied a basic human right - the right to an education. Without an education, children, families and countries are consigned to poverty.

Poor people take control: in all our actions, our goal is to enable people to exercise their rights and manage their own lives. This can take the form of supporting people in efforts to gain access to productive opportunities, such as land rights, markets, training, and government services. It can also consist of supporting the efforts of poor and marginalised people to organise and participate in decision-making.
A rights-based approach: Oxfam's poverty alleviation work is premised on the principle that all people should enjoy certain rights. Oxfam focuses rights issues on five aims which we believe are fundamental to combating poverty: a livelihood, services, security, participation, and diversity.
Linking the global and the local for greater impact: the Oxfams link their work on advocacy and campaigning for changes at global and national level, to their work on practical changes at grassroots level. While our experience of the needs of real people forms the basis of our policy advocacy, our programs are designed to help empower people to take advantage of positive changes in policies and practices.
Working with partners: the Oxfams strive to work through local partner organisations, while simultaneously seeking to strengthen these organisations. In 2000, the combined Oxfams were working with nearly three thousand local partner organisations in some 100 countries. We believe that the empowerment of local organisations is a vital aspect of sustainable poverty alleviation, and an important dimension of the achievement of civil and political rights.
Joining with others: Oxfam International does not work in isolation in the huge challenge of creating a more equitable world. Oxfam joins with alliances, networks and coalitions, which form part of a movement for global equity and justice. Oxfam will make whatever contribution is most appropriate in such alliances, sometimes playing a leading role when that is most appropriate and on other occasions finding other ways to best contribute to support the efforts of others.
Oxfam Japan Needs Your Help!
Oxfam Japan is still very small. We desperately need the help of volunteers in Japan to help us raise local awareness about the vital work Oxfam does around the world. For example:
- Have a look at some of our websites (see below) and learn more about what Oxfam really does. Pass the message around.
- Organise an event in your school, local government office, community group or anywhere else highlighting an aspect of Oxfam's work, and ask for support or donations! Contact Oxfam Japan for support and advice if you have a good idea for an event.
- Give Oxfam a one-off or a monthly donation, however small. This will really help Oxfam to make a difference to many people around the world. This can be done through Oxfam Japan's office (see contact details), or through the following website:
