"A simple act of caring can change a legacy of
suffering into a lifetime of hope and happiness."

David McKenzie, Executive Director, HOPE International

HOPE International Development Agency is a Canadian, non-profit, international development agency based in New Westminster, British Columbia, on the west coast of Canada. NPO HOPE Japan has been active since 2000 in working with other HOPE partners around the world.

Working in Africa, Asia, and the Americas in such countries as Ethiopia, Cambodia, India, Afghanistan, the Philippines and the Dominican Republic, HOPE International undertakes and supports people-oriented projects. These projects empower people and communities in need. Many projects focus on the provision of clean and safe water, sustainable living, primary health and sanitation, and the environment. The projects of HOPE are accomplished with the help of volunteers and the skills of the local people overseas, combined with the charity of people here who care.

It is HOPE International’s aim to offer hope to the poverty-stricken and hungry: those whose present circumstances afford them none.

HOPE's Projects are People Oriented

HOPE's mandate is to provide alternative technological and educational support to people in developing countries where environmental, economic, and/or social circumstances have interfered with the ability of local communities to sustain themselves by using traditional methods. Every project we do is initiated by requests from local representatives.

HOPE encourages people from poor communities to use their skills or learn new ones to implement the project, and the compassion of donors to provide the required funding.

The founders of HOPE are Christian people. HOPE is supported by a broad spectrum of caring people. HOPE is not affiliated with any denomination but remains true to its roots in compassionate Christianity. See our projects.

Achievements

HOPE is currently working in 29 countries throughout the developing world, improving the lives of thousands of poor families by providing clean water, training in food production, health, nutrition, community development and more.

Administration and fundraising costs are under 6% of total income. Cash donations are receipted and are tax deductible in Canada and the United States of America. In some cases, donors can see their contribution doubled or tripled as some of HOPE's projects are matched by the federal and provincial governments. However, most of our projects rely solely on the compassionate support of donors. See our Annual Report.

Upcoming Projects

Heather Jesson, Ishikawa JET, HOPE UNION Team, Dominian Republic, Jul-Aug

"I joined a HOPE UNION team for two months in the Dominican Republic helping to build a water irrigation system to provide water to dry fields. During my time in a small community in the mountains which until recently, was only accessible by a ten hour mule ride, I learned that one can come to appreciate people with lives lived at a vastly simpler level that one`s own. Coming from a society which takes from granted jet travel and all modern conveniences, I was humbled to find the people we were working with took great delight in prizing as ornaments for their small homes, junk food containers that were ready to be burned in the fire. These desperate hands taught me to reconsider my existence of an unsatiable consumer.

Truly experiencing servant leadership was life-changing, and continues to feed my desire to continue in giving of myself to others. HOPE projects enable communities to raise their standard of living while also allowing us with time and money to spare to give of ourselves while in turn becoming enriched.

HOPE International has much experience in preparing people to volunteer in their projects in developing countries. If this sounds like something you want to be a part of, I encourage you to join a HOPE Union trip with an open heart and mind!"
