If you are looking to get a few western goodies to make you feel a little more at home, there are a variety of places you can get them. Locate a large department store and they will usually stock an aisle full of goodies which you thought you would not see or taste for a long time.

You can also join the Foreign Buyers' Club. The FBC is a mail order International Grocery Store that delivers all over Japan. Another company, The Flying Pig offers you Costco's inventory again deliverable by mail.

The FBS's services are split into two stores. The Corner Store and the General Store. The Corner Store has two departments - The Learning Center and The Deli . The Learning Center carries lots of teaching aids, children's videos, children's books, games and a large selection of magazines in English. Learning Center orders are delivered in 5-7 days. The Deli is a mini-market. It carries everything from gourmet food (cheese, Mexican foods, bagels, Vegemite & breakfast cereals) to laundry detergent and paper towels. Deli orders are delivered in 5-7 days.

The General Store offers over 40,000 grocery store items...AND over 2,000 of these are available as 'Singles'! FBC has over 300 breakfast cereals, diet products, health products, medicines, American & European specialty items, 300 Mexican foods, cake mixes, Pop-Tarts and all are available at wholesale prices by the case. General Store orders are delivered in 30-33 days. Approximately 2 weeks after your order is placed, you will receive a shipping invoice letter from their Los Angeles office with the status and approximate delivery date of your order. A further two weeks after you receive your invoice, your General Store items will arrive!

The FBC's services include medicines, personal care products, beverages, and every kind of food imaginable! They also stock books and magazines. You do not have to be a member to take advantage of the FBC. If you choose the non-member option 5% will be added to your order subtotal if you prefer not to pay the ´1,000 for 1 year of membership.

Orders are accepted via fax and online. Customers are asked to pay for their orders when they are placed. Payment can be made by credit card or postal furikae. Visit their website to see their stock or order a catalogue. The FBC has an exclusive introductory offer for members of the JET Programme. See the deal zone for more information.

There are also very large warehouse supermarkets such as Costco in Japan offering items from back home in bulk and at value that your average supermarket could never match. Whilst it is unlikely that one will be in your area you can order online through a company called The Flying Pig. Visit their website at www.theflyingpig.com and take a look.

BOOKS MAGAZINES & NEWSPAPERS

English books and magazines are invariably expensive in Japan. Books can be ordered through your local bookstore and many stores have an English section. You can also exchange books using the 'Classifieds' section of the Jetset website. You can have any magazines which you already subscribe to in your home country sent to Japan by contacting your supplier. If you would like to start subscriptions in Japan, Intercontinental Marketing Corporation distributes many Western magazines:

Intercontinental Marketing Corporation
IPO Box 5056
Tokyo 100-31
Tel. 03-3661-7458 Fax. 03-3667-9646

You can order books through Amazon.com and they will deliver to you in Japan no problem. If you are looking for a book, the chances are that Amazon.com has it and can ship it quickly to you. Click on the image above to check Amazon.com. If you like what you find, you can have Amazon.com send you the book by slow/cheap sea mail or by fast airmail. Be sure to have your credit card ready. This will probably be your cheapest option so check it out.

Daily English language newspapers are available and can be delivered to your home. Newspaper delivery agents take a holiday one day per month. On that one day the newspapers are published and available at shops but are not delivered to subscribers.

The Asahi Evening News, The Daily Yomiuri, The Japan Times and the Mainichi Daily News can be ordered through your local newsagent. There are also online versions of these newspapers, which you can find in our links pages. The Daily Yomiuri is especially good for international news and carries regular sections from Major national newspapers such as the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and the independent. The Daily Yomiuri offers JETs a discount on subscription which can be seen in the deal zone.

The Foreign Buyers Club offers over 50 US magazines air shipped in every week at about half the price of anywhere in Japan and usually about equal to the US price at a newsstand. They also offer sampler packs every month which equals a 3 for 1 deal for customers. For more information take a look at their details above in 'buying western goods'.
