Below you will find a collection of useful files for computer users in Japan. These programs will help you with operating an English language PC in Japan. Please note that older English language versions of Microsoft Windows such as 98 and Me will not run Japanese programs. However, Windows XP and 2000 will run Japanese programs if support for Japanese script has been installed. These files will help you if you have installed an English language version of Microsoft Windows on a computer bought in Japan.


ASAIN FONT PACKS FOR ADOBE ACROBAT READER. Acrobat Reader 6.0 software includes built-in support for Asian fonts. If you are using Adobe Acrobat® 5.x software, you will need to download Asian font packs in order to display Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files that contain text in Japanese.

KEYBOARD FIX FOR WINDOWS 98 & Me: You will notice that the keyboard layout is different and thus some keys do not correspond with what comes on screen. To fix this download the Keyboard Fix below and read and follow the instructions soon your keyboard will be working fine. Does not work for Windows XP.

MICROSOFT IME: Microsoft offer a free program for download from their website called an IME. This allows you to input and read Japanese text into Microsoft Word documents, Web forms, and e-mail messages on any version of Windows. The Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language versions of Microsoft Office XP each come with the Input Method Editors (IMEs) for that language. If you are not are using a Japanese language version of Microsoft Office, you must install the Japanese IME. This makes any computer running an English operating system able to display and write Japanese characters.



NJSTAR COMMUNICATOR: Another program which allows you to do this is called NJStar Communicator. This allows you to input and read Japanese characters in all programs, it is not just limited to Microsoft. A trail version is available for download at the NJStar website.
